Our Work in
Transforming Lives Through Girls' Education in Niger
In the heart of Niger's nomadic communities, where tradition and hardship intertwine, a transformative project is paving the way for girls' education.
Village Rise, in collaboration with key partner Amman Imman: Water is Life, and the Hamsa Girls Education Center (HGEC), is dedicated to breaking down the barriers that prevent young girls from accessing quality secondary education. This initiative is not just about schooling; it's about empowering girls, changing mindsets, and building a brighter future for entire communities.
Our Focus
This project supports 8 resilient young girls, providing them with the opportunity to pursue secondary education at HGEC in Tahoua.
Beyond these direct beneficiaries, the project indirectly impacts 12,300 individuals residing in the villages of Tattiste and Fak, located in the Abalak department of the Tahoua region. These nomadic communities, predominantly of Peulh and Tuareg populations, have historically faced challenges in accessing education, particularly for girls.
Girls in these communities face a multitude of obstacles to education. Cultural norms often prioritize early marriage, viewing girls' education as less valuable than traditional roles. Financial constraints exacerbate the problem, as families struggle to afford school fees and materials. Additionally, limited access to quality and safe educational facilities and resources further hinders girls' opportunities.
The project's implementation focused on three strategic pillars:
Community Mobilization: We engage with community leaders and parents to shift cultural perceptions about girls' education. This involves organizing meetings, awareness campaigns, and establishing a village support committee (CVS) to champion girls' education.
Empowering Girls: We provide comprehensive support to girls enrolled at HGEC, including tuition, food, medical care, and mentorship. Extracurricular activities and tutoring are also offered to boost their confidence and academic performance.
Economic Empowerment: We create economic opportunities for mothers to alleviate their financial burdens and reduce the need for migration. This includes providing financial assistance and supporting income-generating activities.
